MHC polymorphism: AIDS susceptibility in non-human primates.Bontrop RE, Watkins DI Department of Comparative Genetics and Refinement, Biomedical Primate Research Centre, P.O Box 3306, 2280 GH Rijswijk, The Netherlands. bontrop@bprc.nl One of the main host factors controlling resistance to disease appears to be the MHC. The recent poor results in HIV-1/AIDS Phase 3 vaccine field trials underline the importance of non-human primate models for AIDS. These models have been, and will continue to be, important for the definition of protective immune responses relevant to successful vaccine design because they supply essential information on the basic biology of lentivirus infections, mechanisms of resistance, escape and vaccine development.
